During a financial results meeting for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2023, the company introduced the pipeline it is currently developing and explained the areas it will focus on in the future.

The company’s FY09/2023 sales were 897 million yen (+53.4% YoY), with an operating loss of 106 million yen (vs. an operating loss of 99 million yen in FY09/11). There were 16 pipelines that recorded sales in FY9/11, including pipelines that licensed manufacturing know-how of amino acids, organic acids, and polymeric materials to partner companies.

CEO Tomohito Ihara cited biofuels, alternative proteins, and the utilization of inedible biomass as future focus areas for new business alliances and other agreements.

As for biofuels, the aviation industry is switching to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and the market is expanding, so there is a high need for technological development, according to the CEO. For alternative proteins, the company has a business partnership with a startup in the area of using microorganisms to produce alternative meat. In the utilization of inedible biomass, on November 15, 2023, the company entered into a capital and business alliance with Sumitomo Forestry. They will work on the development of pre-processing technology to separate cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, as well as biomanufacturing technology using the separated components. In conjunction with this capital and business alliance, Sumitomo Forestry acquired 900,000 shares of GEI stock.
