Japanese-Thai group discovers origin of early shrimp mortality (EMS) syndrome: infection by Vibrio haemolyticus

In a cooperation between Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology and Katetsart University, genome analysis of several pathogenic strains was carried out and origins of pathogenesis were assayed. In addition, a rapid PCR method was developed to identify the presence of this strain dring acquaculture. JST news release, January 9, 2014

AIST Sugar-chain Biomedical Engineering Center discovers origin of asthenospermia: defect in pp-GalNAc-T glycosyltransferase

80% of male infertility is caused by sperm motility disorders. Through experiments with transgenic mice corroborated by genetic analysis of humans, it was found that mutations in GALNTL5, a glycosyl transferase gene, are responsible for this defect.
