RIKEN group produces PHA of high m.w. in marine purple bacteria

The group of Keiji NUMATA at RIKEN tested a number of purple sulfur and non-sulfur bacteria for the production of high molecular-weight PHA, with Rhodovolum sulfidophilum as a key candidate organism. In many strains, PHA of m.w. about 300.000 in levels up to 20 – 30 dry weight oft he organism could be obtained and isolated.
