RIKEN group develops disease models based on 3,328 genes of knockout mouse strains

The groups of Yuichi OBATA and Jitsuyoshi YOSHIKI prepared knockout mice for 3,328 genes whose phenotypes were then comprehensively analyzed. The clinical features and similarities to human rare diseases were analyzed. As a result, (1) 360 strains of KO mice were effective as a model of known genetic rare diseases, (2) 135 strains of KO mice showed hitherto undetected rare hereditary diseases and may be used as a model of such disease, and, (3) the functions of 1,092 gene were newly clarified.
