Euglena announced that it will sell in Japan sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and next-generation biodiesel fuel (HVO) manufactured by EcoCeres in China.
EcoCeres https://www.eco-ceres.com/ manufactures and sells HVO and SAF made from residual biomass such as waste cooking oil in China and other countries. During the biofuel demonstration project phase in Japan (2019-2024), Euglena supplied EcoCeres biofuel in addition to its own HVO. In the future, the company plans to increase the sales scale of EcoCeres biofuel to several thousand tons per year.
Euglena closed its biofuel production plant in Yokohama in January 2024. In July 2024, the company announced that it will invest in a commercial biofuel production plant in Malaysia in collaboration with Malaysia’s Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) and Enilive, a wholly owned subsidiary of Italy’s Eni. The plant is scheduled to be operational by the second half of 2028. It will use used vegetable oils and animal fats as raw materials, and in the future will use biomass raw materials such as oils and fats derived from microalgae. The company aims to produce 100,000 tons of oils and fats derived from microalgae by 2030.
Until the commercial plant in Malaysia starts operation, Eugleno will deepen collaboration with EcoCeres as one of Euglena’s raw material sources.
