Sumitomo Bakelite Co. has been developing core technologies for resin synthesis using various lignins and industrial applications. As a result of this industrial application development, Sumitomo Bakelite group company Sunbake Co. has begun selling the lignin-modified phenolic resin “Sumitac® PL-700 Series,” in which part of the phenol, a raw material derived from fossil resources, is replaced with lignin, a raw material derived from non-edible biomass.

The “Sumitac® PL-700 Series” products have a 17% reduction in carbon footprint compared to existing adhesives for wood materials. Applications for wood-based materials such as plywood and laminated veneer lumber are expected to continue to expand in the future toward achieving carbon neutrality, and the sale of this product will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

NEDO is currently working on research and development for the social implementation of chemical products that utilize biomass in multiple projects. By promoting these projects, we will contribute to achieving carbon neutrality in 2050.
