NEDO and Osaki CoolGen Corporation began demonstration testing of the world’s first “Development of Biomass Co-Gasification Technology in IGCC with CO2 Separation and Capture”. The purpose of this project is to link the results obtained through the demonstration test to the social implementation of biomass co-gasification technology, and to confirm and verify the impact of introducing biomass fuel on the entire plant when it is introduced on a large scale, and to demonstrate the applicability of biomass fuel in oxygen-blown IGCC with CO2 separation and capture.

The purpose of this project is to verify the impact of large-scale introduction of biomass fuels into oxygen-blown IGCC with CO2 separation and capture on the entire plant as a practical study and to demonstrate the applicability. However, there are no examples of biomass fuels being mixed into oxygen-blown IGCC with CO2 separation and capture anywhere in the world, and technical issues in each process must be resolved. In addition, demonstration at a full scale is essential to establish and implement biomass mixed gasification technology in society.

NEDO and Osaki CoolGen will use the results obtained through the demonstration test to lead to the social implementation of biomass mixed gasification technology. In addition, some of the CO2 separated and captured in this project will be supplied to the adjacent carbon recycling demonstration research center, thereby contributing to the development of carbon recycling technology.

IGCC is an abbreviation for Integrated coal Gasification Combined Cycle, and is a power generation system that is more efficient than conventional coal-fired power plants by gasifying coal and combining a steam turbine and a gas turbine.
