As part of NEDO’s “Development of bio-based product production technology to accelerate the realization of carbon recycling” (hereinafter referred to as this project), Chiyoda Corporation is currently constructing a demonstration facility for a new fundamental technology to produce useful proteins using plants. The plan is to develop this demonstration facility so that it can be used by various companies to develop practical applications of plant biomanufacturing, and to function as Japan’s first “plant biofoundry.”
Chiyoda Corporation, Nippi Corporation, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, and the International Center for Biotechnology, Osaka University, have been working on the “Development of mass production technology for highly modified proteins using plants” since fiscal year 2022. This project aims to develop a system for producing functional proteins that require complex and advanced modifications using plants (tobacco leaves) at low cost and in a stable manner.
In this project, we are currently constructing a demonstration facility capable of bench-scale to pilot-scale production, which is scheduled to begin operation next spring. In the future, this facility will function as a “plant biofoundry” to develop processes and manufacture samples for useful substance products developed by various companies, providing support for their practical application.
