Regional Fish, Kyoto and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) announced on February 9, 2023, that they will establish a joint venture to produce and sell improved seafood on a commercial scale.

The two companies have been jointly promoting the breeding and onshore cultivation of fish and algae using genome editing. So far, they have worked on the development of algae that easily absorb carbon dioxide and fish that grow faster by feeding on algae. The algae is being developed by NTT and the fish and shellfish by Regional Fish.

The joint venture was established to produce and sell fish and shellfish from the varieties being developed by the two companies. While Regional Fish develops seeds and seedlings, the joint venture will engage in land-based aquaculture on a commercial scale. The plan is to produce and distribute fish and shellfish locally in cooperation with local governments.
