In collaboration with the Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth (RITE) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, NEDO has jointly engaged in a “moonshot-type R&D project for directly capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere on the scale of several kilograms per day. It is planned to design a pilot-scale direct air capture (DAC) test apparatus and evaluate its economic feasibility in the late 2020s, which absorbs low concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere (400 ppm: 0.04%). RITE has developed a CO2 solid absorber that can capture low-concentration CO2 in the atmosphere with high efficiency. CO2 recovery from CO2 solid absorbers can be obtained by steam regeneration, which enables high concentration, and or air regeneration, which can handle various types of waste heat.  steam regeneration method. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. has developed a steam regeneration system which will be scaled-up in cooperation with RITE. A dedicated experimental building was constructed on RITE’s premises (Kizugawa City, Kyoto Prefecture), and the newly developed DAC compact test apparatus was installed and evaluation has begun.
