The groups of Atsushi MIYAWAKI and Asako SAKAGAMI at RIKEN have developed an improved flurescent probe (FUCCI (CA) ) whose fluorescence differs once a cell is in phase S, G2 or M phase of its cell cycle. The technology is based on cell-cycle dependent ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis and can be applied to observe the life cycles of mammalian cells, e. g., in cancer, and requires for measurement only a normal fluorescence microscope.
