Hirosaki University group develops high-yield process for muconic acid from lignin

Kazunori SONOKI of Hirosaki University and Eiji MASAI of Nagaoka University of Technology have engineered Pseudomonas putida KT 2440 and Sphingobium sp. SYK-6 to use G-, S- or H-lignin as sole carbon source for producing cis-cis-muconic acid, a precursor for polymer materials. Yields were up to 35 wt%.
