Assistant Professor Ayumi Minoda has developed a system based on Galdieria sulphuraria, a red algae inhabiting sulfuric-acid rich hot springs, to enrich rare earth metals. Metals leached under acid conditions were Cu2+, Dy3+, copper, Mn2+, zinc, Co2+, manganese, neodymium Nd3+), dysprosium, Fe2+/3+, Al3+, cobalt, Zn2+ and Cr3+
