At Kobe Advanced Medical Center Hospital, the first autologous iPS cell-derived retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is transplanted to a patient.

The therapy is intended for the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration. The female patient is 70 years old, and a RPE sheet of about 1.3mm × 3mm was transplanted subretinally. There was no bleeding, and the patient feels well. The sheet was prepared by RIKEN Kobe Institute, with Masayo TAKAHASHI as project leader.
