Public-private consortium publishs draft genome of Nori (Pyropia yezoensis), a marine red algae

The assembled contig size of nuclear genome was approximately 43 megabases (Mb). As color trait determinants, light-harvesting genes involved in the phycobilisome were predicted from the nuclear genome, and a new pathway for phycobilisome degradation was found, possibly providing a novel target to prevent color fading of Nori in aquaculture. The consortium was composed of Kyushu University, National Institute of Genetics, Hitachi Software Management and the Fisheries Research Agency, MAFF.
