RIKEN team reveals how water plasticizes silk material

Using thermal analysis, X-ray scattering of synchrotron radiation and tests on tensile strength in different silk samples, the team of Keiji NUMATA found that water molecules of silk material function as a plasticizer”, inducing beta-sheet crystal structures thus improving the mobility of the silk molecules.”
