AIST focused on a micro flow channel made from thin and small plastic substrate, inserted between high temperature and low temperature regions. The genes are amplified by moving the sample at high speed and detecting with fluorescence. Nippon Sheet Glass has developed a compact fluorescence detector that utilizes the technology of SELFOC® microlens used for optical communications. This detector can measure fluorescence with high sensitivity without the need for a dark box, and has strong resistance to vibration. Using Escherichia coli, the device detected 20 copies/ μL in about 10 minutes, using norovirus, 20 copies/μL in about 12 minutes and
influenza virus, 50 pfu/mL in about 12 minutes.
