Regional Fish and NTT announced the establishment of a joint venture company to produce and sell improved seafood on a commercial scale and to start operations on July 1, 2023.

Regional Fish markets edible portion-enhanced red sea bream and high-growth tiger pufferfish as genome-edited foods, and has been collaborating with NTT on the breeding and onshore cultivation of fish and algae using genome editing. They are developing algae that can easily absorb carbon dioxide, with NTT, and regional fish that feed on algae grown in this way and have high growth potential. In land-based aquaculture, the environmental burden will be reduced by combining land and fish species to match the water temperature of each area with the temperature at which the fish species to be cultivated can grow, and by conserving energy used to heat and cool the water used for rearing.
