“Proposal on Rules for the Sale of Cellular Foods and Legislation to be Developed in Japan” The
The scope of the proposal covers meat, eggs, milk, and seafood produced by cell culture, collectively referred to as “cellular foods”. The report emphasizesthat these foods have fewer disadvantages, such as environmental impact, than conventional livestock-derived products, and will form a large market in the future as the demand for protein expands. Eat Just’s cultured chicken was approved in Singapore in 2020, and in November 2022, the U.S. was on track for a safety review of UPSIDE Foods’ cultured chicken.
The proposal suggests that existing laws should be interpreted as much as possible. The idea is that cellular foods are a type of processed food under the existing law. The proposal also calls for the establishment of guidelines for the industry on points that are not mentioned in existing laws and could become a gray zone if no rules are established.
