With support from NEDO’s “Development of Fuel Ammonia Utilization and Production Technology/Blue Ammonia Production Technology Development”, INPEX Corporation constructed Japan’s first blue hydrogen and blue ammonia production demonstration facility in Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture. The entire facility, including this facility, is collectively known as “Kashiwazaki Hydrogen Park”. This project is Japan’s first demonstration project to cover the entire process from production to utilization of blue hydrogen and blue ammonia, with carbon dioxide (CO2) generated during production separated and captured to reduce atmospheric emissions.

Through this project, NEDO will address low-carbon challenges in industrial sectors such as electricity and heat demand, contributing to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

In this project, natural gas will be transported from INPEX’s Minami-Nagaoka gas field to the Higashi-Kashiwazaki gas field via an existing pipeline to produce hydrogen and ammonia. The CO2 generated during hydrogen production will be separated and captured and injected into a geological reservoir at the Higashi-Kashiwazaki gas field, where gas production has already ceased. By building and operating a process that combines the production of hydrogen and ammonia from natural gas with the separation and capture of CO2, we will demonstrate blue hydrogen and blue ammonia production technology.
