In the global rankings of the Nature Science Index, Japan maintained its 5th place position, but its paper share decreased by 9% from the previous year. Among the world’s top 50 research institutions, the University of Tokyo ranked 23. Kyoto University had moved to position 55. RIKEN ranked at position 111.
Canada, France, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States recorded decreases of at least 7% in their paper share, Australia and Germany less than 3%. Germany’s Max Planck Society fell from 4th to 9th place, and France’s National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) dropped to 13th place. Harvard University maintained its 2nd place, Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) dropped to place 16 and 17, the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) to place 24.
