As part of NEDO’s “Development of Bio-based Product Production Technology to Accelerate the Realization of Carbon Recycling” project, Green Earth Institute, Inc. (GEI) is proceeding with the “Kanto Biofoundry Base” in Mobara City, Chiba Prefecture.

In this project,  scale-up of production processes and sample production for smart cells owned by companies and universities are carried out who are trying to implement biomanufacturing. Since the start of operation in June 2023, eight demonstration projects have been carried out, and all scale-up verifications to 300L or 3000L fermenters have achieved productivity that is equivalent to or up to approximately three times the productivity of useful substances verified at laboratory scale by the commissioning company or university.

The Kanto biofoundry is equipped with fermentation tanks up to 3000L and facilities that can carry out a series of bio-production demonstrations from pretreatment to purification processes using explosion-proof equipment that allows the use of organic solvents. Users can utilize GEI researchers as human resources. GEI is working to bridge the gap between users and the commercialization of useful substance production using smart cells through production demonstrations such as scale-up. They  also support the development of technology for a system that can calculate costs and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions simply and in a timely manner.
