The Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth (RITE), Kyushu University, and Nagoya University will show a demonstration for Direct Air Capture (DAC), a technology that directly captures carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere, at the Osaka-Kansai Expo. At the “Carbon Recycling Factory” at the Expo site, RITE’s DAC demonstration machine will capture 300 to 500 kg of CO2 per day from the atmosphere. A portion of the captured CO2 will be directly supplied to a methanation facility operated by another operator on the same site, where it will be synthesized into e-methane and then supplied and used as city gas in the guest house kitchen at the venue.
The project is part of Japan’s “Moonshot Research and Development Program”, Goal 4 “Realize sustainable resource circulation for the restoration of the global environment by 2050” and will be exhibited at the Osaka-Kansai Expo as “RITE Future Forest”. The equipment has been manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, a subcontractor.
