A Japanese team develops defectless and uniform micro cellulose

A group of doctoral students from the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University has succeeded in producing high-quality cellulose nanofibers with regular twists by identifying and suppressing some of the causes of defects. Among the steps to produce more regular cellulose nanofibers, it was found important to carry out the process of extracting cellulose from plants and stereoselective oxidation under mild conditions.

It is expected that defect suppression in micro cellulose will significantly enhance the performance of this biopolymer as a reinforcement material. Additionally, these CNFs are expected to closely maintain the native state of cellulose, contributing to a better understanding of the structure of individual cellulose microfibrils.
