Kansai Electric Power Co will begin a hydrogen co-firing power generation demonstration  at Himeji No. 2 Power Plant from April 2025. This demonstration will utilize the existing large-scale gas turbine power generation equipment at the plant and aims to establish operational technologies such as operation, maintenance, and safety measures for hydrogen power generation.

The hydrogen used in the demonstration will be mainly produced by a water electrolysis hydrogen production device installed on the power plant premises, and some hydrogen produced outside the power plant will also be accepted. This will be the first hydrogen co-firing power generation project in Japan with a co-firing ratio of 30% (by volume) using a large-scale commercial gas turbine.

A portion of the electricity generated in this demonstration project is scheduled to be supplied to the Osaka-Kansai Expo.
