The Ministry of the Environment’s 2025 budget is 343.7 billion JP¥, an increase of 5.8 billion JP¥ from the initial budget for 2024.
Among its bio-related budgets is a project to grasp greenhouse gas emissions and absorption, and to consider and evaluate new sinks. There will also be research on blue carbon, which refers to carbon that is absorbed into coastal and marine ecosystems and accumulates in biomass and soil.
In addition, the Ministry will start a new “Renewable Energy Hydrogen Utilization Promotion Project in Local Areas” in fiscal 2025. This project will be implemented in part in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The project aims to produce and utilize hydrogen, which is essential for decarbonization, by using renewable energy such as solar power generation from waste plastics and livestock manure as raw materials. The main business activities are (1) research and demonstration of a renewable energy hydrogen supply chain model, (2) model construction and demonstration to reduce the cost of hydrogen supply using existing infrastructure, (3) support for the introduction of equipment such as hydrogen boilers and high-efficiency fuel cells, (4) support for the maintenance and inspection of renewable energy hydrogen stations, and (5) verification of systems and information dissemination regarding the environmental value of hydrogen derived from renewable energy.
