Under a NEDO contract, Sumitomo Osaka Cement Co., Ltd. as the lead company is working on the development of “Establishment of carbonation technology using various calcium sources ” which is part of NEDO’s Green Innovation Fund project “Development of concrete manufacturing technology using CO2.” This project has already achieved the production of high-quality artificial limestone that can recycle carbon dioxide (CO2) as a resource.

Sumitomo Osaka Cement has now developed a “next-generation low-carbon semi-flexible pavement” that combines CO2 emission reduction and carbon removal, using the “carbon recycled cement” and “artificial limestone” products of this project, in cooperation with NIPPO Corporation. A test construction was successful, setting the stage for practical application. This product uses carbon recycled cement and artificial limestone as the materials used in the pavement structure, and has succeeded in reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 58% compared to conventional semi-flexible pavements.
