NEDO has started the world’s first ammonia fuel mixing test using an actual marine 4-stroke engine with an 80% ammonia fuel mixing ratio, which is planned to be installed on an actual vessel. IHI Power Systems is in charge of the development. The actual engine and its peripheral equipment will undergo operational tests to further improve the co-firing rate, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and confirm quality and safety when installed onboard a vessel. Upon completion of the tests, the actual engine will be installed as the main propulsion system for ammonia-fueled tugboats (A-Tug). The A-Tug equipped with the actual engine is scheduled for completion and commercial operation in 2024. This will pave the way to becoming carbon neutral by 2050 and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the shipping industry.
