RIKEN-led consortium deciphers shark genome

The consortium composed from members of Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, RIKEN, Osaka City University and the University of Tokyo Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute successfully analyzed the whole genome sequence of “canine shark”, “tiger shark” and “whale shark”. The high-precision genomic information obtained from this research is based on studies on the occurrence and ecology of “cartilage fish” that occupy a unique position in vertebrate evolution and marine ecosystems. It provides valuable insight into, e. g., hormone production in sharks which is relevant for their breeding in aquariums.
