Based on research by Tamakihide MATSUNAGA of Nagoya City University, Fujifilm has succeeded in inducing the differentiation of intestinal epithelial cells from human iPS cells. The cell line has properties similar to intestinal epithelial cells derived from human organisms such as high expression of cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4, peptide transporter PEPT1 and expression of the P glycoprotein (P-gp) gene, a transporter that releases drugs from cells. The cell line is much superior over the human colon cancer-derived cell line Caco-2 which is conventionally used for drug absorption studies.
