NEDO-supported consortium inaugurates bagasse to ethanol demonstration plant in Thailand

A consortium of Toray Industries, Mitsui Sugar and Mitsui & Co. have developed technology to use bagasse for ethanol production, with a membrane process for ethanol separation from the fermentation medium. Processing capacity is 5,000 ton/year (as dried bagasse) , and cellulose sugar production is 1,400 tons/year (equivalent to bioethanol 700 kL/year). The plant will be operated until 2022, to evaluate energy saving effects, product performance and system economy. After the project is completed, a manufacturing factory for useful substances will be built that utilizes the results of this project for sugar producers that emit bagasse.
