Kobe city quarter: hydrogen only for 2 days, a next step towards Japan’s „hydrogen society“

On April 19th and 20th, hydrogen was used as the only fuel to provide 2800 kW of heat and 1100 kW of electricity to the two facilities of Kobe Port Island central civic hospital, to Port Island sports center, and to Kobe International Exhibition Hall. The performance of each device and system in actual supply based on hydrogen only operated without problems. Thermoelectric supply by a 1 MW class gas turbine capable of burning hydrogen and natural gas was provided by Obayashi Co. and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. under a NEDO contract. Japan makes great efforts to establish a „hydrogen-based society“ by about 2030, see Schmid, Nachrichten aus der Chemie, Oktober 2017: „Japan setzt auf Wasserstoff“.
