Mitsubishi Electric pioneers SiC-based Modular High Voltage Direct Current (HDVC) converter, reduces power loss by 50%

Power loss of converters, their size and weight is a limiting factor to reach high efficiency of long distance/large capacity power transmission from offshore wind wheels and offshore platforms. The company built a 3.3 kV SiC power semiconductor module of modular design as HVDC, with parallelized modules to suppress the resistance inside the converter cell. Using this system, power loss was reduced by 50 %, volume by 21%, and weight by 14%. Until 2020, a 6.5 kV SiC power semiconductor module will be developed.
