NEDO-supported consortium develops photocatalytic panel reactor for artificial photosynthesis

The consortium, named Artificial Photosynthetic Chemistry Process Technology Research Association (ARPChem), comprises the University of Tokyo, TOTO Co., and Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, and develops new photocatalysts for artificial photosynthetic systems. As a milestone result, a 1 m2 reactor was developed which decomposes thin layers of water (1 mm) into hydrogen and oxygen under natural sunlight without the use of external energy or chemicals, using a strontium titanate photocatalyst.
