Tohoku University team produces hydrogen by reacting hot spring water with aluminum

The group of Noriyoshi TSUKITA at Tohoku University has produced hydrogen from Tamagawa Hot Spring water at Semboku by reacting it with aluminum at 50 °C. The Tamagawa hot spring water has pH 1. As expected, no carbon dioxide was developed. As this and other hot springs spit with about 9000 l per spout, this technique might be used to produce small amounts of hydrogen locally. According to government plans for a hydrogen society”, the current production of 200 tons of hydrogen per year might be scaled-up to 300,000 tons in 2030.”
