In the project, seawater used in Ras Laffan industrial city as cooling water for facilities and discharged to the sea at a maximum of about 45 ° C will be used as the water resource for seawater desalination by a reverse osmosis membrane process developed in Japan. It is expected to save 80% or more energy and reduce freshwater cost by more than 40% in comparison with presently used evaporation methods. A demonstration plant is also planned.
