Both the Silkworm Technology Center in Gunma Prefecture and sericulture farmers in Maebashi City obtained permission from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of the Environment to produce fluorescent silk, containing GFP, from genetically modified silkworms in an open system, following the rules of the Cartagena Protocol. The silkworms had been hatched from their eggs before ina closed facility. The GFP silk will be commercialized as an interior material by Hosoo, a 330 year old textile manufacturing company in Kyoto.
