Sumitomo Rubber clarifies rubber biosynthesis

In a cooperative project with Tohoku University, Sumitomo Rubber scientists have found that three kinds of proteins play a role in the biosynthesis of natural rubber in Hevea, rubber transferase1 (HRT1), rubber elongation factor (REF) and HRT1-REF bridging protein (HRBP). HRT1 allows for the polymerization of rubber, HRBP helps HRT to combine with the particulate membrane, and REF stabilizes the membrane-bound particles. The results of this study are believed to support technologies for a more stable rubber production.
