Shinshu University develops cellulose-based hollow fiber membrane for highly improved water purification

The procedure is based on the use of N-ethyl-N’-methylimidazolium methylphosphonate-based ionic liquids which allow for the dissolution of high cellulose concentrations at low temperature. By a special process, the cellulose solution forms a completely solidified hydrogel which shows excellent functionalities, e. g. for forming into various shapes and for removing impurities from water.
