Dr Ryoji NOYORI steps down as RIKEN president after nearly 12 years of service

During the service of Dr NOYORI, a technical chemist from Nagoya University and a Nobelist, RIKEN researchers discovered element 113, completed two of Japan’s key technology projects—the SACLA X-ray Free Electron Laser and the K computer—and most recently, has launched the world’s first clinical trial in regenerative medicine using iPS cells. In 2014, he had to cope with a research misconduct issue around Haruko Obokata. His successor is Dr Hiroshi MATSUMOTO, a space scientist and former President of Kyoto University
