Japanese team clarifies role of galactolipids in cyanobacteria thylakoid membranes

A multi-university group led by Koichiro AWAI of Shizuoka University has found that cyanobacteria convert glucolipids to galactolipids via monglucosyldiaclglycerol epimerase. Mutants where this gene is disrupted can still form authetnic thylakoid membranes without galactolipids.
