NAIST develops simplified process for synthesis of silicoorganic compounds

The procedure is based on the reaction of silica with methanol in the presence of acetone dimethyl acetal as a dehydrating agent at 242 ℃. By adding carbon dioxide under pressure (2 MPa), tetramethoxy titanium and small amounts of potassium hydroxide, the reaction of silica, methanol and acetone dimethyl acetal yielded 88 % tetramethyl silane after 96 hours.
